All patients must have pre-operative bloodwork within the 60 days prior to the procedure.
All dogs with heart murmurs must have chest radiographs at a minimum and they must be performed within the 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Echocardiograms with a board certified cardiologist are recommended and should be offered to the owner prior to the date of their procedure. The risks of anesthesia and cardiac disease must be reviewed with the owners prior to the day of the procedure.
All cats with heart murmurs should have an echocardiogram with a board certified cardiologist within the 60 days prior to the procedure. If an echocardiogram is declined then a pro-BNP must be performed and results must be normal. The risks of anesthesia and cardiac disease must be reviewed with the owners prior to the day of the procedure.
Patients with chronic kidney disease should have IV fluids the day prior to their procedure or daily subcutaneous fluids for 1-3 days prior to the procedure depending on severity.
The following medications must be discontinued 24 hours prior to anesthesia:
angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors - ie. Enalapril/Benazapril
angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARBs) - ie. Telmisartan
calcium channel blockers - ie. Amlodipine
beta blockers should also be discontinued if able to safely.
All medications will be restarted the night after anesthesia.
Cats with chronic gingivostomatitis needing full mouth extractions need prior approval for scheduling and will have additional fees.
I request all patients to be dropped off before 9am and IV catheters to be placed in all patients prior to pre-medication (when temperament allows).
Trazodone and/or gabapentin should be prescribed to overly anxious or aggressive patients for use the night before and the morning of their procedures. Dr. Robertson routinely uses these medications for all anesthesia patients so use is not limited to aggressive or severely anxious pets.
Owners should be prepared that pickup times will be between 2pm to 6pm and they will be contacted after their pet's procedure to schedule a discharge time.
Please feel free to contact me by email or text message (send case photos from awake oral exam and previous dental chart/rads if available) for guidance with patient scheduling and preparation.
